むかし、むかし、京都比叡山延暦寺に小さな弟子がおりました。 ある晩、僧たちは何もすることがなかったので、一人の僧がこう提 案しました。

「ぼた餅でも作らないか？」

Long, long ago there was a little disciple in Enryakuji-temple in Hiei mountain in Kyoto. One night, as the priests had nothing to do, one priest said to the others,

“Why not cook Botamochi (rice cake covered with bean paste)?”

その小さな僧は、みんなが庫裏（くり）でぼた餅を作っている間、 部屋の隅で寝ているふりをしました。ぼた餅を食べたがっていると 思われたくなかったのです。

まもなく、ぼた餅ができたようでした。誰かが起こしてくれると 思っていると、その通りでした。

「おい、坊、起きろ！」

The young boy pretended to be sleeping at the corner of the room while they were cooking them in the kitchen, as he didn’t like to be thought that he was anxious for them so much.

Soon it seemed that they finished cooking them. While he was expecting that someone would wake him up, one priest surely called him,

“Hey, Boy. Wake up!

うれしく思いましたが、ぼた餅を食べたかっていると思われたくないので、返事を しませんでいた。もう一度言われるまで答えないことにしました。 寝たふりをしたままでいると、別の僧が言いました。

「寝かしておけ。ぐっすりだ。 」

これを聞いて、戸惑いましたが、もう一回起こしてくれることを願いました。

He felt happy but as he didn’t like to be thought he was eager for them so much, he didn’t respond. He decided to reply when he was called again. While he was still pretending to sleep, another priest said to the priest,

“Don’t wake him up. He was falling asleep.”

Hearing it, he was embarrassed and wished that they would wake him up once more.

しばらくすると、みんなが食べているのが聞こえてきました。もう我慢できませんで した。大声で。

「はい！！」と叫びました。

みんな大笑いです。(Kudos) 「宇治拾遺物語」より

Soon he heard them munching them. He could no more endure pretending to sleep.

After a few minutes, he cried, “YES!!”
