むかし、むかし、お坊さんが一人、旅をしておりました。 ある晩のことです。お坊さんは、旅の途中、山の中の古びた、荒れ果てた小さなほこら で休むことにしました。長い間、誰も気にかけなかったとみえ、中はほこりとくもの 巣で覆われていました。

Long, long ago there was an old Buddhist priest traveling around the country, who stayed at a rusty small old temple in a mountain one night during his travel. As nobody had cared about it for a long time, it was much covered with piles of dust and lots of webs.

お坊さんは、夜中薄暗い明かりで目が覚めました。変な声が聞こえてきました。

「お坊さん、俺たちが誰だかわかるかい。」

「お、お化けだ。」お坊さんは、背中に寒気を感じました。

When he had slept, he was woken up by a dim light in the night and heard a strange voice:

"Mr. Priest. Do you know who we are?"

"Wow. Gho, Ghosts!" cried he, feeling something cold on his back.

「お坊さん、これからなぞなぞを三つ出す。答えられなかったら、食べてしまうぞ。はじめるぞ。」

「足が一本、目が一個。さて誰でしょう。」と一番目のお化けが言いました。

「四角い顔に、歯が二つ、目が三つ。さて誰でしょう。」と二番目のお化けが言いました。

「丸い紙の体の中に明かりが一つ。さて誰でしょう。」と三番目のお化けが言いました。

「助けて下さい。」と、お坊さんは震えながら言いました。

"Mr. Priest. We'll give you three riddles. If you can't answer them, we'll eat you. Now we'll start."

"I have one leg and one eye. Who am I?" asked a ghost.

"I have a square face and two teeth and three eyes. Who am I?" asked another ghost.

"I have a fire in my round paper body. Who am I? " asked the last ghost.

"Oh, Please help me." he cried, trembling himself.

でもお坊さんは食べられては困るので、答えを出そうと必死に考えました。

「わかった。」と立ち上がると、大きな声で言いました。

「最初は、傘のお化け。二番目は下駄のお化け。最後は堤燈のお化けです。」

お坊さんが言い終わるやいなや、お化けはパッと消えてしまいました。(2004.2.10)

But he thought and thought hard to find out the answers so that he wouldn't be eaten.

"I see." He stood up and cried in a loud voice.

"First is the ghost of 'Umbrella'. Next is the ghost of 'GETA' (Japanese wooden clogs). Last is the ghost of 'Japanese lantern'."

As soon as he finished speaking, they disappeared in a flash. (2002.8.16 with Mazuka)
