むかし、むかし、蛇はうつくしい声をしていましたが、目がありま せんでした。地面の下の暗い穴に住んでいました。いつも、目が欲 しいな、と思っていました。 「声の代わりに目があったら、野原の美しい花が見られるのにな あ。」と思いました。

Long, long ago a snake had beautiful voice but no eyes. She stayed in a dark hole under the ground. She always wished she had eyes, thinking "If I had eyes instead of voice, I could see the beautiful flowers in a field."

一方、モグラは目はありましたが、声が出せませんでした。野原に住んでいました。歌が大好きで、 いつも、声が欲しいな、と思っていました。 「目の代わりに声があったら、毎日歌が歌えるのになあ。」と思いました。

On the other hand, a mole had eyes but no voice. He lived in a field. As he liked singing, he always wished he had a voice, thinking "If I had a voice instead of eyes, I could spend my life singing songs."

ある日のことです。蛇はモグラと出会って、自分の目とモグラの声を交換しました。 蛇は、野原で美しい花が見られて幸せです。 モグラも、声が出せ、静かな地面の下で歌がたくさん歌えて幸せです。 もっとも誰もモグラの歌を聞いた人はいませんが。(2004.2.25)

One day the snake met the mole and exchanged her voice for his eyes. She was so happy to get her eyes and see the beautiful flowers in the field, while he was also happy to get his voice and sing many songs under the quiet ground, though it was never heard. (2001.8.15)
